Calculating grid losses in the 110 kV and 150 kV grids
22-12-2011
Under the Independent Grid Administration Act, the 110 kV and 150 kV grids became part of the national high-voltage grid on 1 January 2008. The management of these grids was also transferred from the regional grid operators to TenneT, with the exception of the so-called Cross-Border Lease (CBL) grids. This new situation has created new interfaces between the regional grids and the national high-voltage grid. Most of these new interfaces do not have a metering device for accounting purposes, and operational measurements can be performed at only a few interfaces.
Since 1 January 2008, the grid operators have used the so-called I2R method to calculate the grid losses in the 110 kV and 150 kV grids. The energy exchange at the new interfaces can be calculated on the basis of the measurement results at the old interfaces and the calculated grid losses in the 110 kV and 150 kV grids. Initially, each regional grid operator used its own method to perform this calculation. On 1 January 2011, a uniform method was introduced based on a report drawn up by KEMA.
