Large-scale energy storage
01-05-2009
TenneT strives to ensure a reliable, affordable and clean supply of energy. We monitor the continuity of electricity supplies and the security of supply in the Netherlands. One of TenneT’s tasks is to incorporate in the Dutch electricity supply energy that has been generated sustainably. The proportion of this kind of energy will increase in the coming years as the Netherlands and Europe pursue a growth to 20% sustainable energy in 2020 and a 20% reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2).
Transmitting a larger volume of sustainably generated electricity has consequences for the tasks that TenneT performs, among other things for maintaining the power balance. The electricity supply system will need greater flexibility in the years ahead because wind and sun will provide fluctuating power that is difficult to regulate. One way of increasing flexibility is by increasing the buffer capacity of the system. Large-scale storage systems can help maintain the balance, thus absorbing peaks in production surpluses or deficits. TenneT is actively brainstorming on such developments.
