Departments and activities

The electricity supply in the Netherlands is highly reliable: consumers can trust that they will always have power – 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. All TenneT employees work together to ensure that no power failures occur. Every employee has a specific role in this process.

Our organisational structure is tailored to the two types of services we provide: transmission services and system services. Transmission services have been delegated to the business unit Transmission Operations, while the business unit System Operations is responsible for system services. TenneT’s core activities are supported by four staff departments. In addition, TenneT has developed a number of services in support of the market, which have been delegated to our subsidiaries CertiQ, EnerQ and TSO Auction.

Transmission Operations business unit

The employees of the Transmission Operations business unit take care of the infrastructure (stations, lines and cables) used by the market parties to transmit electricity. This business unit manages and maintains the grid, takes care of grid planning and provides advice on possible new installations to be constructed. Transmission Operations also continually monitors whether the grid needs to be altered.

System Operations business unit

TenneT monitors how much electricity is transmitted across the grid in the Netherlands every day. The demand for and supply of electricity must be continually balanced to ensure that the proper voltage (at a frequency of 50 Hertz) is maintained in the high‑voltage grid. The System Operations business unit oversees this balance and can adjust any imbalances by utilising regulating, reserve or emergency capacity. The costs incurred by TenneT in this regard are charged on to the market parties by System Operations. This process is called 'imbalance settlement'. TenneT's national control centre also forms part of the System Operations business unit. From this centre, TenneT monitors the transmission of electricity day and night.

Market and Regulation staff department

The Market and Regulation staff department maintains relations with TenneT's key stakeholders: producers, customers, traders and the Netherlands Office of Energy Regulation (DTe). Market and Regulation does this by drawing up rules, terms and conditions and contracts. This staff department also maintains contacts with DTe and the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Finance staff department

The Finance staff department is the financial conscience of the TenneT Group. Its employees draw up the TenneT Group's financial plans and financial statements, in close cooperation with the relevant departments of TenneT TSO and TenneT’s subsidiaries. In addition, the Finance staff department is responsible for the financial accounts and their alignment with the accounts of other companies.

Human Resources staff department

The Human Resources (HR) staff department develops human resources policy and supports the management in implementing this policy. The HR department coordinates the recruitment and selection of new staff, maintains the employee and salary records and advises the Board of Management on organisational developments. The department is also responsible for health & safety and environmental policy.

Corporate Affairs staff department

Corporate Affairs actually consists of three departments: Legal Affairs, Public Affairs and Communication. Internally, these departments support TenneT's primary operational process. Corporate Affairs ensures that TenneT achieves its desired position in the outside world and is able to maintain this position. One way in which this is done is by drawing up the Corporate Communications Plan, which provides guidance for TenneT's external communication. This plan also includes the press policy, which describes TenneT's relationship with the media and the press. The Public Affairs staff department maintains relations with TenneT's political contacts at the local, national and EU level. Public Affairs advisers see to it that TenneT’s position is sufficiently taken into account in decisions made in respect of the electricity transmission industry.
