High‑voltage pylons to be removed for new bridge in Nijmegen

04-02-2010 At the behest of the Nijmegen municipal authorities, work is about to get underway on the removal of six high‑voltage pylons by electricity transmission operator TenneT. The work will commence on 8 February 2010. Removal of the pylons is necessary for the building of the new bridge across the River Waal in Nijmegen.

The removal is possible because the overhead connection was already moved underground at an earlier date. In total, six pylons which are no longer in use have to be removed. The pylons will each be cut into two large sections and then suspended by crane in order to move them. They will then be cut into smaller sections on the ground and transported in a container. Finally, the foundations will be dug up and the holes filled in with sand.

Underground connection
Over the past few months TenneT has worked on moving underground the 150 kV electricity connection between TenneT’s substation on Winselingsweg and the premises of transport company Novio. This work has now been completed and a new cable link of approx. 1.5 kilometres in length has been installed. A so‑called distribution point has been installed on the Novio premises, with the connection continuing via the existing overhead line.
