Upward trend in electricity consumption
20-05-2010
The electricity consumption levels measured by TenneT are continuing to rise. This is apparent from the latest figures compiled by the Dutch electricity transmission operator. Figures from April show an increase in consumption; the upward trend of the past few months is becoming more firmly established. However, almost 4 percent less electricity was consumed in comparison to the previous year.
Around the twentieth of each month, TenneT publishes up-to-date figures on the consumption, production, import and export of electricity on its website. By making this data available to the public, the Dutch electricity transmission operator aims to create more transparency regarding developments in the electricity market.
Figures on electricity consumption
The figures are presented in the form of three graphs. The first graph shows the electricity consumption in terawatt-hours (TWh) per month, with the figures presented as rolling annual totals. This means that in each month, the total of the month concerned is presented together with the total consumption in the eleven preceding months. A graph showing the relative difference in consumption compared to the same month in the previous year has also been produced. A positive figure indicates that consumption has increased compared to the previous year, while a negative figure indicates that consumption has decreased.
The consumption figures relate to the consumption of electricity in the Netherlands, excluding the direct consumption of electricity generated by small local production units such as wind turbines and combined heat and power (CHP) units. In addition, the so-called ‘industrial consumption’ of electricity generated and consumed on-site by large companies is not included in the figures. The latter type of consumption cannot be measured by TenneT on the national transmission grid because it is the outcome of a local process. Figures published by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) indicate that this type of decentralised and industrial electricity production currently amounts to approx. 6% of observed consumption. In other words, the figures published by TenneT represent approx. 94% of total electricity consumption in the Netherlands.nsumption levels can be affected by the number of working days in a particular month and specific weather conditions.
