Benefits
The NorNed cable enables Dutch power plants to make better use of their production capacity at night, as Norway’s main electricity demand occurs at night. But this is not the only benefit the NorNed cable offers.
Benefits for society at large
International trade will benefit from the NorNed cable. This, in turn, will contribute to more stable electricity prices in Northwestern Europe, since electricity prices in Norway and the Netherlands are expected to converge. There will be less fluctuation in the electricity prices determined on an hourly basis by APX and Nord Pool Spot. This will result in more stable electricity prices in general.
Benefits for the market
Purchasing electricity in the Netherlands is expected to become cheaper. While the demand for energy will remain the same, the supply will increase. In situations like this, basic economic principles dictate that prices will drop.
Benefits for end users
The purchase price of electricity in the Netherlands is expected to drop slightly. End-users (e.g. consumers and businesses) will end up profiting from this development because they will be charged a lower price for each kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity.
