Third transformer arrives in Eemshaven
On Monday, 18 June, Eemshaven welcomed the arrival of a rather special transport. The third of four transformers (each coming in at 250 tonnes) was shipped from Norrkoping (Sweden) to Eemshaven. The final part of the transformer’s journey to the converter station that is currently being erected was made over land, by platform lorry.
The NorNed project involves the installation of a high voltage cable spanning 580 kilometres on the North Sea seabed between Norway and the Netherlands. This cable will be connected to the Dutch high voltage power grid at a purpose built converter station. This converter station, consisting of two buildings and a few annexes, has a combined surface area equalling three football pitches. In order to minimise the transport weight, the construction of the transformer will be completed on site, following which it will be filled with some 200,000 litres of oil.
