New high voltage substation at Boxtel
Electricity transmission operator TenneT is planning to build a new high voltage substation at Boxtel, a town in the south of the Netherlands. The spatial planning procedures for the project have already started and applications for the required permits will be submitted in November. The aim is to begin construction work in the second quarter of 2011.
What does the work entail?
TenneT is working to expand the high voltage grid in the Netherlands. The current project consists of two parts:
• A new high voltage substation at Boxtel
• New underground cables between Boxtel and Oirschot
Why build a new high voltage substation?
The demand for electricity transmission is on the rise in this region, due to such developments as the planned new Rabobank data centre (which will process and store electronic transactions conducted by the bank), the expansion of nearby industrial estates, and new residential construction. The underground cable links and the substation at Boxtel are necessary in order to transmit the required electricity in a safe and reliable manner throughout the region. Part of the substation will be built by the regional grid operator Enexis, which is responsible for managing and developing the medium and low voltage grid in this part of Brabant province.
Where will the work be carried out?
The new substation will be built at Heringsweg in Boxtel, near the tunnel and railway line.
When will the work start?
The substation is expected to be fully operational by 2012.
