New underground high-voltage cables to link Velsen and Beverwijk

Electricity transmission operator TenneT is going to install two new underground high-voltage cables between Velsen and Beverwijk. TenneT has to modify the high-voltage grid in the region for various reasons. Among other things alterations are necessary to allow local area development, to replace obsolete cables and to keep in step with the ever-growing demand for electricity. Work is expected to start in the municipality of Velsen in the second week of January 2011.

The new links consist of two plastic cables of 150 kilovolts (150,000 volts) between the Aagtendijk transition compound in Beverwijk and the 150 kV station in Velsen. Two oil pressure cables already interconnect the two stations. Those cables will eventually be partially removed to make way for the further development of local land. The work required to install the new links will be prepared and performed by Liandon, a company that specialises in undertaking projects of this kind. The project was mapped out in close consultation with parties including the municipality of Velsen. The initial steps included routing the new links.
