North-West 380 kV
Demand for electricity in the Netherlands is set to increase over the coming years. Due to the liberalisation of the energy market and the resulting rising demand for transmission capacity, energy is also being transmitted over longer distances. The grid in the north of the Netherlands is currently operating at its maximum transmission capacity. Furthermore, several applications have been submitted for the construction of additional power plants, and ever more sustainable energy is produced locally. Without a new connection, there will be no transmission capacity available to transport the electricity from these new plants in the future. For these reasons, an expansion of the high‑voltage grid is needed.
The electricity connection will cover a distance of approx. 220 km, from Eemshaven to Diemen, via Ens. Preparing and constructing the connection will take some seven years. The connection is roughly scheduled for completion by 2016.
More information on the new connection can be found at www.noord‑west380kv.nl (in Dutch only).
