Upgraded grid in Drenthe en Noord-Oostpolder

TenneT is planning to realize several new cable links and high‑voltage substations in the provinces of Drenthe and Overijssel.  The new substations will be built near Klazienaveen, IJsselmuiden and Luttelgeest.  The expansions are an essential part of TenneT’s grid upgrade programme.  The new connections will also enable TenneT to connect local horticulture businesses to the electricity grid.  The projects are scheduled for completion in 2011.

The decision to build the new substations and cable links was made in consultation with local authorities and representatives of the glasshouse horticulture sector, who have committed themselves to actually using the new infrastructure.  The substations will also secure a future‑proof energy supply in the region.  The work will be carried out in close collaboration with regional grid operator Enexis.  The substations are scheduled to be taken into operation in mid‑2011.

Provincial and local authorities and the horticulture organisation LTO very much welcome this increase in the transmission capacity of the electricity grid.  The initiative will enable the local horticulture industry to continue to grow and feed the generated sustainable energy into the grid,  thus making an important contribution to the reduction of CO2 emissions in the region.  The grid upgrade is a lifeline for the development of the glasshouse horticulture industry.

Minimal nuisance
TenneT is aware of the possible nuisance this may cause and wants to involve residents in the process in a timely manner.  We will be making use of local knowledge and experience during the installation process, so that we can take the various interests into account wherever possible.  Throughout the process TenneT will collaborate closely with all the parties involved, including municipal authorities and land owners.

In designing the underground cable sections, TenneT has tried to follow the contours of the landscape as far as possible, or to lay the cables near existing above‑ground high‑voltage connections.  The underground cables are installed at a depth of 1.80 metres,  with the base width of the trench ranging from 3 to 8 metres.  Ground lease contracts are concluded with landowners along the cable route.  The width of the strips of land involved varies from 8 to 13 metres.  TenneT will also make arrangements with the landowners about the so‑called ‘work strip’ that TenneT will use to carry out excavations and other work.  The work strip will be 25 to 35 metres in width.
