The Electricity Act of 1998 designates TenneT as the independent administrator of the Dutch national transmission grid (also known as Transmission System Operator, or TSO). The Act defines TenneT’s tasks as grid operator. TenneT’s primary statutory duties are the administration of the national transmission grid and the maintenance of the required balance between supply and demand in the Dutch electricity grid. We fulfil these duties through our transmission and system services.

TenneT is charged with three main tasks:

  1. maintaining and managing the transmission grid of 110 kV and higher in the Netherlands and investing in the infrastructure of this grid;
  2. ensuring that electricity transmissions take place as intended and monitoring the continuity of the electricity supply in the Netherlands, among other things by maintaining the balance between the supply of and demand for electricity;
  3. undertaking activities aimed at developing the market and contributing to the establishment of an integrated electricity market in Central Western Europe.
